09 Pre-RISE Ceremony PhotoEleven Pre-RISE scholars participated in the Pre-Freshman/Freshman Summer Enrichment Program (PFFSEP) sponsored by the Fayetteville State University Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (FSU-RISE) program during the month of July.  Participants included Appiffany Joiner, Daniel Corral, Travis Escourse, Alexander Torrez, Brensha Williams, Britnee Horne, Amber Pleasent, Ashley crawley, Kiera Davis, Gloria Smith, and Joi Emanuel.

Prospective biology, chemistry, psychology and mathematics majors participated in the intensive four-week summer enrichment program to enhance their academic preparation for college freshman-level courses including Principles of Biology (BIOL 150), General Chemistry I (CHEM 140), and Pre-Calculus/ Calculus (MATH 129/142) during the 2009-10 school year. Scholars were involved in meaningful mini-lectures and hands-on laboratory activities to reinforce their knowledge in their coursework and to get them excited about math and science.  Results from pre-tests were used to optimize the academic preparation of scholars so that each student achieved his/her academic goals.  Scholars also participated in weekly enrichment seminars which exposed them to college life, college survival skills, and biomedical/ behavioral research career paths.

The Closing Awards Ceremony, which was held on July 31 in Lobby of the Seabrook Auditorium, was the culmination of the four week enrichment program. Pre-RISE scholars made oral presentations to family, friends and faculty to showcase what they learned over the summer.  Scholars, who demonstrated outstanding performances in PFFSEP, were also recognized during the ceremony.  All program participants were recognized with a certificate for their participation in the summer program. The summer workshop instructors included Dr. Erin White, Dr. Darren Pearson, Dr. James Raynor, and Mr. Gillespie, assisted by program assistants Kearston Cado, Leslie Moore and Pedro Cardama.

The FSU-RISE program is federally-funded by the National Institutes of Health/ National Institutes of General Medical Sciences (NIH/ NIGMS).  The overall goal of the FSU-RISE program is to increase the number of well-prepared FSU minority students pursuing terminal degrees in biomedical and behavioral fields of study. For more information on the FSU-RISE program, visit http://www.uncfsu.edu/fsurise/ or call Ms. Shironda Harris, Program Coordinator or Dr. James E.
