The Fayetteville State University (FSU) Fine Arts Series has an extraordinary line-up of events for the month of October.  On October 2, 2012, the series presents its first of many community outreach concerts of the season.  The FSU faculty will be joined by the FSU Dance Ensemble, the Highland Brass and an ensemble of strings for an evening of masterworks from the Baroque.  Highlights from the evening include excerpts from Claudio Monteverdi’s operatic masterpiece L’Orfeo, Francesco Geminiani’s Concerto Grosso “La Follia,” and Heinrich Biber’s programmatic ode to war “Battalia.”  Works by Bach, Handel, and Purcell complete the program.  The concert is at 7:00pm at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church located at 1601 Raeford Road.  The concert is free and open to the public.

On October 5, 2012, The Ray Codrington Jazz Series opens this year with a performance by the West End Mambo and Salsa Group.  Formed in 1999, West End Mambo is comprised of musicians from North, South and Central America as well as the Caribbean.  This nine piece band performs a fiery mix of classic salsa from bolero and rumbas to guaracha and son montuno.  The event begins at 7:00pm at Seabrook Auditorium on the campus of FSU.  The event is free and open to the public.

The second outreach concert of the season will be on October 14, 2012, which features, the Marian Anderson String Quartet.  This all-female all-African American string quartet, named for the famous African American contralto Marian Anderson, presents Songs of the Middle Passage.  This program is inspired by the cultural traditions of the Middle Passage, which was the stage of the triangular trade in which millions of people from Africa were shipped to the New World.  The program is a catalyst promoting music and dedicated to the African Diaspora.  Within this program, the MASQ performs new music and multimedia pieces as well as classic works from the 17th and 18th century that have yet to be performed on the concert stage.  This special concert will be in the Pate Room of the Cumberland County Library and Information Center located at 300 Maiden Lane in downtown Fayetteville.  The concert is free and open to the public.

On October 24, 2012, as part of Fayetteville State University’s Homecoming activities, the Fine Arts Series and the FSU Office of Student Affairs presents Ailey II.  Ailey II is universally renowned for merging the spirit and energy of the country’s best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding emerging choreographers.  Alvin Ailey personally appointed former Ailey member, Sylvia Waters, as Artistic Director in 1974.  Under her direction, Ailey II has flourished into one of the most popular dance companies in the country, combining a rigorous touring schedule with extensive community outreach programs.  The program begins at 7:00pm in Seabrook Auditorium.  General admission is $10.00 and free for FSU students with ID. Please Call the FSU ticket office at 910-672-1724.

FSU is the second-oldest public institution in North Carolina. A member of the University of North Carolina System, FSU has nearly 6,000 students and offers degrees in more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
