Fayetteville State University has received notification of funding in the amount of $1,250,000 for an Upward Bound Math & Science Program (UBMS).  The Upward Bound Math and Science Program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students.  The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.  Upward Bound Math & Science provides Saturday Academy classes, academic counseling and advisement, college campus tours, and a six-week non-residential program that exposes students to STEM careers.  The program includes summer research with faculty, job shadowing, and work-study.  The Upward Bound Math & Science Program will serve students in the 9th-12th grades who attend schools in Cumberland (Douglas Byrd and Westover High) and Robeson (Lumberton) Counties.

Dr. Thompson-Pinckney, Director of the Office of College Access Programs said, “We are excited about the opportunity to not only prepare disadvantaged youth to successfully complete high school and enroll into college, but we also have the opportunity to cultivate a culture that encourages underrepresented populations to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  The competition for getting a newly funded Upward Bound Math & Science grant was fierce nationwide, and I am humbled by the opportunity to be able to serve more youth in the Sandhills Region through such a prestigious program.  This program will complement the work that we currently provide through our office to include GEAR UP, Talent Search and Upward Bound (Traditional) in providing disadvantaged students with opportunities to make college a possibility.”  The Upward Bound Math & Science Program is currently recruiting youth who attend Douglas Byrd High, Westover High and Lumberton High.

The Office of College Access Programs’ mission is to encourage and assist youth who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education with preparation for, entry into, and completion of a post-secondary education.   The Office of College Access Programs is comprised of federally funded programs that include GEAR UP, Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math & Science, AmeriCorps VISTA.  The Office provides college preparatory services to students, parents, and educators in Cumberland, Hoke, and Robeson Counties.
