WFSS 91.9 FM Reaches Out to the Community with New Programs

WFSS 91.9 FM radio station at Fayetteville State University has always been a voice to the community through its broadcasts.  Part of its mission is also to be a good community citizen.  Recently, WFSS launched several new programs to benefit the community and its listeners in the Fayetteville/Cumberland County region and 12 other surrounding counties it serves:

Military Matters is a new, monthly program created with a mission to link the station’s military neighbors with the local, civilian community by sharing personal stories from soldiers. It is produced in cooperation with the 22nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment stationed at Fort Bragg (NC) and broadcasts on the last Friday of every month at 9:00 a.m. The program also includes guests from the civilian community who work with projects and events that benefit and honor our military.

Play It Again is a project that targets youth in the community by collecting musical instruments from local citizens, refurbishing them, and then donating them to area middle schools’ band programs. WFSS developed this outreach program to allow students the opportunity to participate in their school band program despite not being able to afford buying or renting instruments. WFSS has partnered with the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County, the North Carolina Symphony, Cumberland County Schools and local music stores to make Play It Again an important project that benefits young people in our community interested in music. If you would like to donate a musical instrument, please call WFSS at 910-672-2650.

The 919 Beat was recently added to the WFSS music program line-up to educate as well as entertain listeners about jazz and blues musicians using biographical information and examples of their music. It is heard weekdays at 10:06 a.m. and 2:06 p.m. Jazz, the primary music on WFSS, is often referred to as “America’s Classical Music,” and this program keeps listeners informed about classic, new, straight ahead, and contemporary forms of this music genre.

Caribbean Link, also recently added to the schedule, provides Caribbean music, a sound that is often incorporated into jazz. It airs Saturdays from 10:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. In addition to Caribbean music, WFSS also broadcasts other world music programs such as African Rhythms—Sundays, 6-8 p.m., En Voz Alta—Sundays, 8-9 p.m., and La Hora Latina—Sundays, 9-11 p.m.

WFSS is poised to launch other new programs in 2013, continuing to enhance its news and jazz format. Stay tuned!
